The British Army Air Corps was founded in 1911, using balloons and later aircraft, it was joined with the Royal Naval Air Service to form the RAF in 1918, but re appeared to fly gliders in WW2 and now operates Army Helicopters.
The US Army Air Corps formed out of the US Air Service in 1926 (the Air Service having been formed in spring 1918) and became the USAF in 1941 - although the paperwork took a while to sort out. The modern Air component of the Army is the Aviation Branch - starting in the 1950's with helicopter units and Air Cav and formally reappearing in 1983.

The air Force and Navy allow waivers for multiple convictions, but waivers are a lot harder to get in these branches of the service.

It was safer and they had great training area. Also, many of the RAF pilots were Americans and Canadians. Some of the Americans did not serve with the US Army Air Corp and stayed with the RAF Army Air Corps through the entire war.
