The Wright Brothers first flew their powered airplane in 1903. They demonstrated it for the Army and eventually the Army ordered some. This became known as the Model 1911 Wright flyer.

During test trials, Orville Wright took Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge up for a flight on Sept 17, 1909 and he crashed. Orville was trapped in his seat and badly injured. Lt. Selfridge the first person to die in an airplane crash.
