In 1570 English sailors were fishing in the waters off the Grand Banks the coast of Newfoundland and in 1578 Elizabeth issues a charter to Sir Humphrey Gilbert giving him the right to establish a colony in America. Operating under the charter he lands in Newfoundland with 200 and officially claimed the island for England, but he doesn't stay and Gilbert drowns in a storm enroute back to England. His half brother Sir Walter Raleigh two years after his brothers death sent 7 ships of over 100 men to America to establish a colony and look for gold. Roanoke was established, no gold was found, and the colony fought with local natives. When Drake landed in June 1586 many of the colonist accepted his offer of passage back to England. In 1587 another group of colonist arrive in Roanoke headed by John White and the first English women to come to America were in this group of 100. The first English baby will be born. White left and intended to return, but the Spanish attacked with the Armada and White couldn't leave, but when he got back in 1591 the island was deserted and no one knows what happened to the colony.
