Construction began in 1848. The final structure was completed in 1884.
The monument was originally financed through private contributions collected by the Washington Monument Society. Due to a number of complications, the Washington Monument Society ran out of money and construction halted in 1854. In 1876, Congress took over responsibility for completing the monument, enlisting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to complete the construction, which they did between 1876 and 1884.

∙ 11y agoConstruction of the Washington Monument commenced on July 4, 1848. Work stopped for 23 years between 1854 and 1877 due to lack of funding (this is why the colour of the stones changes slightly about a third of the way up the obelisk). The capstone was placed on December 6, 1884.
