Apparently there are several opinions as to when and who developed the Periodic Table and the discoveries of the various elements. According to the Western Oregon University, common elements such as gold, silver, tin, copper, lead & Mercury were most likely discovered before written history, the first scientific element discovered was phosphorous in 1649. By 1869 63 elements had been discovered.
