Knoxville served as the first capital city of Tennessee from 1796 until 1812. Knoxville served as the capital a second time from 1817 to 1818. Nashville was the capital of Tennessee from 1812-1817 and became the permanent capital of the State of Tennessee in 1826.
Knoxville, Tennessee was first settled in 1791. The first known settler was James White. The City of Knoxville was not incorporated, however, until 1815.
