Australia's first newspaper was The Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser, and was published from 5 March 1803. It was printed by convict George Howe, who had extensive experience in printing in London and the West Indies. Howe was originally given a death sentence for the crime of shoplifting, but this was commuted to transportation to New South Wales. Howe's printing skills were quickly utilised, and he was responsible for issuing the first book printed in Australia. He was also permitted to negin the first newspaper, printing from a shed at the back of Government House. Initially, The Sydney Gazette was printed weekly, and held four portfolio pages of official material, with a small number of private notices. Early editions comprised shipping news, auction results, crime reports and agricultural notices, poems, literature and religious advice. Due to the lengthy shipping journeys, overseas news tended to be out of date by 10-14 weeks, but it was still eagerly received by the public.
