Little is known about the people who first inhabited Ireland during the stone age about 9000 years ago. It is believed that the first people came from the north of Spain, by boat. We known nothing about their language or what they called themselves, and little about their culture except from what we have found in archaelogical excavations. There is genetic evidence of people in Ireland that can be traced back to the region in northern Spain, proving the link.
The first settlers may have arrived 16,000 years ago and came from northeastern Spain and southwest France (the Basque country). Ireland and Britain were still attached to the European continent at the time.

Settlers first arrived in Ireland from Spain about 20,000 years ago during the last Ice age. Um, but maybe it was Neanderthal who lived there then, that's a heckuva long time ago. Some people think that some Heidelbergenses got trapped on the southern fringe of Munster during the Wurm glaciation and turned into the first Neanderthals through genetic isolation. Then they escaped and spread all over the world. I actually hear that the first modern humans didn't get to Ireland until 9000 BC (oldest human remains), and that they were Capoids from Morocco, and possibly the basis for the leprechauns.
