The French helped the Americans colonies as far back as the Battle of Bunker Hill (actually fought on Breeds Hill).
The largest and most vital role was at Yorktown when the American's were pushing the British and Hessian soldiers back to the sea. The British expected the British fleet to be there, but the French showed up and blocked the inlet causing the British to be cut of and soon after surrendered ending the American revolution. This battle sealed the American victory in the war and they were finally free from British rule.
