The Dutch that came to Mauritius brought Christianity with them. Five years after they left the island, the French came with Catholicism. Then the British took the island to prevent the French using it as a base to attack India. The British tried to convert the island to Protestantism. Mauritius became independent in 1968 and there is no state religion. Christianity is not the only religion on the island. There are Hindu and Muslims.
