Dismayed by the lack of marksmanship shown by their troops, Union veterans Col. William C. Church and Gen. George Wingate formed the National Rifle Association in 1871. The primary goal of the association would be to "promote and encourage rifle shooting on a scientific basis," according to a magazine editorial written by Church. After being granted a charter by the state of New York on November 17, 1871, the NRA was founded. Civil War Gen. Ambrose Burnside, who was also the former governor of Rhode Island and a U.S. Senator, became the fledgling NRA's first president. http://www.nrahq.org/history.asp
Originated in early 1870s by former Union Army Officers to promote civilian marksman ship training. Many line soldiers during the American Civil War were either poorly trained or had no training with the individual weapons they were issued. Note that at that time, there was no great general hubbub about private firearms ownership by civilians - except in certain locales where race often entered into the equation. The NRA grew to become a Civil Rights promoter and champion of the 2nd Ammendment as well as promoting civilian marksmanship and firearms ownership.

The NRA has supported both Democratic candidates and Republican candidates. The NRA either doesn't know; because they haven't asked, or the are not telling because there are no published stats on this question or other facets of NRA membership.
Since the NRA does not solicit or collect that information on its members, there is no way to know.
