The first Westerner who learned of the Giant Panda was in 1869 by a French missionary Armad David who had received a panda skin from a hunter on March 11, 1869.
Now the first Westerner known to have seen one was a German zoologist named Hugo Weigold who had purchased a cub in 1916.
Pandas have been declining since before the population boom in 1949 and have been the focus of conservation as far back as 1958 within China although all conservation work with Panda's was stopped during the Cultural Revolution (1966-69 or arguably 76). Pandas were not declared as endangered however until much later.
There are actually two dates when the Panda was added to the Endangered List as there are two Endangered Lists. One for America and One for the Rest of the World.
The US Fish and Wildlife Service added the Giant Panda to their Endangered List in 1984. The IUCN (The World Conservation Union) had Panda's on their Red List in both 1986 and 1988 but classed as "Rare" and not "Endangered". The ICUN changed the Pandas classification to "Endangered" in 1990.
Update:
The panda was removed from the endangered list in 2016 and is now classified as vulnerable.
Panda's came in 1869 old huh?
Pandas started to be extinct in 1988

The red panda first become endangered in 1996. As of June 2014, there are only 2,500 or so left in the wild and they have become extinct in several of the Chinese provinces.

The Red Panda was first listed by the IUCN Red List as "vulnerable" in 1994. It was then changed to a status of "endangered " in 1996. It was first studied by the IUCN Red List in 1988, but it wasn't listed due to insufficient data, until the 1994 listing. For more details see site listed below.
The Asian Elephant was first listed as "endangered" with the it's population decreasing in 1986 by the IUCN Red List. It is currently listed as 'endangered" by the IUCN Red List and the population is still listed as decreasing. For more details, see sites listed

endangered species is a species that is almost extinct
The major reason the panda is endangered is because humans encroach on their territory. Habitat loss is why the panda is endangered.

The Grevy's Zebra and the Mountain Zebra are both endangered. But the Quatta Zebra has already become extinct in the 1800's.
