The United States Space Shuttle Atlantis docked with the Russian Mir Space Station for the first time on June 29, 1995 as part of the STS-71 mission. The docking marked the first time a Space Shuttle docked with a space station.
The NASA shuttle Atlantis has never exploded. As of June 2007, its most recent mission was to deliver new solar panel arrays to the International Space Station. The shuttles Challenger and Columbia were both destroyed in separate accidents - Challenger in January 1986, and Columbia in February 2003. All crew were lost in both accidents. As of September 2021, NASA does not have any shuttles left to launch. The Space Shuttle program was retired in 2011, with the final mission of the Space Shuttle Atlantis. NASA now relies on commercial partners and other space agencies for crewed missions to space.
Last planned flight is on 26th February 2011 by Endeavor. There may however be another, but it has not received funding (08/2010) Possibly 28th June 2011 by Atlantis.
Atlantis will be the last Space Shuttle to go to space, flight number STS-135. Due for launch 28th June 2011. Endeavors last launch was on 16th May 2011 number STS-134. Endeavor is the newest of the shuttles, which was a replacement for Challenger and began operations in 1992.
