St George's day never has been a bank holiday in England. It was however a major feast day and (unofficial) national holiday in England from the early 1400's until the early 1700's.

As the formal Act of Union between England & Scotland also occured in the early 1700's, it is possible that the decline in the celebration of St George's day was a direct result of a desire to create a British identity for the new country of Great Britain.
