It started when King Charles II died with no children, and the two closest heirs were (by marriage) Louis XIV(French) and Emepor Leopold. These two were known as the two 'MaritimePowers'. The French wanted to gain more power and land by taking over Spain, but the Spanish didn't like them. And they started a war. Also, Queen Anne, who was going to take the Spanish throne, everyone said no, and attacked for the crown. But the English didn't side with the French because other than hating the French, they also had a queen for England, and they didn't want to go against that. So that is how it started.
