The Bear Flag Revolt took place in California, while Mexico still had control of it. While US and Mexico were feuding, John Fremont, a US army major, began encouraging the Americans living in Mexico's California to revolt. 33 people did, creating a flag for the "California Republic". The flag had a bear and a star on it, thus came the name "The Bear Flag Revolt".
