He was elected leader of the Labour Party in Parliament in 1994, after the death of the previous leader John Smith. At the time, Labour Party were the minority in the House of Commons. In the following election in 1997, the Labour Party won control of Parliament by a landslide, and Blair became Prime Minister, a position he held until 2007.
