Whaling has been an activity for thousands of years, archealogical discoveries in South Korea suggest evidence of whaling occuring as early as 6000 BC. Commercial whaling is widely though to have begun in the late 1800s and early 1900s with the invention of various whaling devices such as the flexible harpoon and steam winches.
Whaling started in the 17th century but was not made big until the 18th century. However in the 20th century we began to make Factory Ships which with are new modern day technology made it much easier for us to track down and catch whales.
A random fact for you: in the 1930's 50,000 whales were killed and not replaced, that is double the amount of whales we are thought to have left in this world today.

Whaling isn't good at all
Commercial Whaling has been banned since 1986 by the International Whaling commission. However, scientific whaling is allowed to strict quotas.
Whaling should'nt be allowed again, as it could cause a slowly growing population of great species, into an endangered species. Whaling still exists illegally in some countries, and whale parts are in several cosmetic's including lip-stick! Whaling is a vicious, dangerous so called "sport" or "hobby", but would you call being chased by murderer's a hobby? I dont think so.
