Female German Shepherds generally have their first heat cycle at around 6 to 12 months of age. Sometimes, a female GSD may not have their first seasonal estrus cycle until they are 12 months of age or older, depending on that particular dog. Remember, however, that this information is very general and not all female dogs will follow these exact patterns any more than female humans.

Twenty-five percent of German Shepherd Dogs suffer from hip or elbow displasia, though the symptoms may not develop until they are older (after breeding). The responsible breeder will not breed them until they have completed health clearances for CERF, OFA, cardiac, and thyroid at a minimum. OFA evaluations (for hip/elbow displasia) cannot be performed until the dog is at least 24 months old. Therefore, a German Shepherd Dog is not ready to breed until he is at least 2 years old and has completed health screening. However, he may be physically capable as young as six months old. So don't alow an intact male unchaperoned access to an intact female after six months of age.
