Elephants live in family groups for many generations, therefore they never go on their own. Orphaned elephants aren't alone either. Usually another female elephant cares for that elephant.
Their mothers stop caring for them when they are four to five years old because it takes a while for the elephants to learn everything. Once they have learned, they become a member of the group who protects their family.
Elephants become independent at age 10-15. Females will live with their mother for life, unless the herd becomes to large. Then the herd splits but will stay within 5 miles of each other, so they can communicate with each other. Males leave the herd when they are 10-15. The males, or bulls then go and join a bachelor herd.
The African elephant calf is entirely dependent (emotionally and physically) on his/her mother for three to five years.
Baby elephants need their mother's milk for at least three years or even longer.
