Traditionally, in northern and eastern France, the main day for giving presents was St. Nicholas' Day (Dec 6). That tradition is lost and it is by now customary to give presents on Christmas Eve.

Often they receive presents on Christmas Eve.

They also have celebrations on Epiphany (6th January) - where they eat a special cake called a "Gallette des Rois", sometimes a frangipane cake, and there is a little porcelain figure hidden in the cake. Whomever gets the piece of cake with the figure in becomes the "King or Queen" for the day, wears a paper crown, and gets to be head of the household for the day.
