That is because rats are nocturnal animals. The word nocturnal means that something is awake at night and sleeps at day, and we are talking about rats. That means rats steal food from us at night, like if we are sleeping, but only if the bags aren't protected!

This depends on what type of rat you are referring to.

Wild rats spend most of their time in sewers, their primary function is to reproduce, which is pretty much the same for most animals, they don't really 'do' anything specific.

However, domestic or 'fancy' rats are genetically different and are bred as pets, i personally find that rats make excellent pets and are friendly, inquisitive and most intelligent.

I wouldn't recommend a wild rat as a pet though, they can be very dangerous as they have a nasty bite and living in the sewers makes them prone to infect you.

1. Sewers - They're dark and slimy what better place for a rat?
2. Under furniture - If this question has something to do with a pest in your house problem, this answer would fit best. Furniture like sofas, refrigerates, or stoves are very common.
3. Air Vents - An air vent could also be common because of the lighting failure.
