billions of billions of years ago. they formed over millions of years when the molecules were slowly pulled towards each other by gravity until they collide and merged. that now had a bigger mass and thus stronger gravity. they pulled more and more matter into the asteroids we see today. the same is true for our planets and stars, however they obtained more mass faster so there gravity grew pulling in more molecules. and this phenomenon is still happening today. when we get meteor showers it is because our gravity pulled in the meteor.
