The Earth goes around the Sun, and the Moon goes around the Earth. Sometimes, the Earth gets just exactly in between the Sun and the Earth, so that the shadow of the Moon hits the Earth. When that happens, we have a solar eclipse.

There are generally two solar eclipses each year, but because the area on Earth where the Moon's shadow lands is so small, it's rare to see one.

Lunar eclipses also occur twice a year, but because they happen on the Moon, everybody on the night side of the Earth can see each one.
