Female belugas typically give birth to one calf every three years. Gestation lasts 12 to 14.5 months. Newborns are about 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) long, weigh about 80 kilograms (180 lb), and are grey in color. The calves remain dependent on their mothers for at least two years.
Whale calves can nurse for up to two years. When they are ready to survive on their own, they will still likely stay with a group for protection until they are fully adult.
Whales usually care for their babies for a couple of months. Then when the baby is old enough, he/she leaves its mother for the first time in search for its mate.
