For a 2002 MDX, there are four screws to remove the cover. Then remove the spring ring holding the intake hose. Remove the cover and replace the air filter. Replace the cover and screws and then reconnect the intake hose and spring ring.
take out the glove box there is a metal strip the filler is behind it.
In between air filter and throttle body. Very easy to replace you don't even need any tools! Just unplug electrical connection and it has a metal clip that holds it in place.

Nonspecific question. Yes, you should replace them. Time, every 30K or sooner if driving in an area that is dusty/dirty. The HVAC pollen filter blocks dust/debris that enters the vehicles cabin from the outside air. Also blocks particles that are recirculated from inside the cabin when changed from fresh air to recirculate. Another way you would know to replace the filter is if there is an odor from the dash vents or if the air from the dash vents is weak. Just like the filter on a homes HVAC system.

The 1997 Acura intake air temperature sensor is located on the air filter housing. The sensor will be on the right hand side of the air filter housing.
Remove the air filter housing cover. The air filter will lift out. Drop the new air filter into the housing and replace the cover.
