There are many different hammers and they are classified for usage, such as claw hammer, framing hammer, engineers hammer, dead blow hammer, etc.
I would most likely use a plastic coated, "dead blow" hammer. or some other robber headed mallet. Also it may help to put a block of wood between your mallet and the work you are trying to protect. dtm
