Installing automatic flood lights on your premises is a form of self-defense. Being part of a group on an outing is a form of self-defense. As to when to utilize self-defense that takes the form of physically defending yourself, the moment the aggressor makes a move, even if it's only drawing his balled fist back to strike you, you have the right to defend yourself in a physical manner if you have no avenue of escape.
