The first strong earthquake listed in earthquake annals for California occurred in the Los Angeles, California in 1769. The major earthquake affecting California were in between 1769 and 1989.
I think the last one we had ( recently) was in the Mono Lake region. Many happen there because there is volcanic activity. In fact, the volcanic gases are so bad there that all the plants have died. Earthquakes happen just about everyday here, but most are so small that we don't feel them. They also happen in remote areas and only when an aftershock hits a populated area do we hear about them.
California had the earthquake because of movement of tectonic plates.
