Schizophrenia normally occurs during adolescence, although it can develop later and much later in life. There is also speculation the children may also be able to suffer from it, but due to issues regarding developmental psychopathology, it is difficult to differentiate between what would be considered Childhood Schizophrenic symptoms and normal childhood behaviour.

There are many causes for Schizophrenia, some of which are more substantial than others. For example: Reduced brain stem size when compared to those without the condition, neurological disorder, brain damage, genetic inheritance, childhood trauma, adult trauma, drug abuse, environmental factors, and sometimes no prevailing reason for the condition.
