I've been watching the Georgia aquarium beluga whales off of igoogle on live cam for the past couple weeks. I've noticed about the time it gets dark is when they sleep. However, keep in mind they only rest half of the brain at a time so they can still move and breathe. They need air about every 30mins depending on the whale actually, so if they were in deep sleep completely they would drown. If you ever get a chance to watch them, they are very entertaining and interesting in their behaviors. I hope this helped a little.
