How do stallions recognize their foals?

The stallions recognise they're colts by there smell. Ocasinally a stallion won't recognise they're foal if it is a boy ( a stallion likes alot of mares in his herd so he doesn't care if they are girls) so the stallion will take the foal as an enemy stallion and fight the poor foal who will usally die and then be eaten by bears, Seriously!

How many horses are in a herd?

Herd of animal is define by a large group of that animal...it can vary. Free-roaming mustang can be seen in the west, they can be around 15-20 horses Actually horses are herd animals. The "herd" is actually called a band, for wild mustangs. The band consits of a dominant male, the stallion, and a lot of mares and foals. Bachelor stallions that don't have their own band of mares will often challenge another stallion for his mares. The winner of the battle will get the mares. Some mares have been known to stay with their old stallion if a bachelor wins. Domestic horses do live in "herds" though. there is a lead stallion, he is mostly for breeding and protecting, then there is a lead mare, she is the one in charge, she tells everyone what to do, then, there is foals and mare's. that is who is in a heard and what they're jobs are.

Are there more mares than stallions in a herd?

Yes. Typically in any wild herd there is only one stallion with a harem comprising of 10 to sometimes 50 mares. The only other stallions that could be found in this herd are those young male horses that are too young to be ready to breed any females; these are called colts. Once they have reached sexual maturity or are old enough to leave their mothers, the dominating stallion will chase them away. There are also herds of stallions, often called bachelor herds, which mainly comprise of young teenage-like stallions that don't have their own females to guard and mate yet. Sometimes there may be an older stallion or two with them, depending on whether that old stallion has been replaced by a younger and stronger male.
