There's no way to predict when a dog will have her first heat cycle. It can happen anytime from 6-8 months on average.

The first sign of a female coming "Into Season" is often swelling of the Vulva. This swelling can occur anytime from a week before bleeding, to the day before.

Spaying can be done at any age, but a female dog get some pretty significant health benefits if she's spayed before the onset of her first heat cycle.

A Female, should NEVER be bred on her first heat, (she has immature eggs) and preferably not her second either. The rule of thumb that works best is to breed on the third season, or at 1.5 to 2 years old, and after your veterinarian has given her a clean bill of health, and she is up to date on all her shots.

How long are springer spaniels pregnant for?

My springer spaniel was in heat for about 6 weeks in total last January. Other dog owners have told me that that is an exceptionally long time, so may be a one off unusual case. However, the vet told me that's about right.

You are getting a springer spaniel in a soon any advice?

These are some of the breed highlights of English Springer Spaniels: * They don't like to be left alone and may become nuisance barkers if they're bored or lonely. * In recent years, there have been reports of English Springer Spaniels who are aggressive or overly submissive. * In essence, there are two varieties of English Spring Spaniel: ones intended to work in the field, and ones intended to show. * Don't expect your English Springer Spaniel to be a good guard dog. * English Springer Spaniels were developed to have great stamina and energy. * Some English Springer Spaniels can demonstrate submissive urination, which means they pee in excitement or anxiety when you come home. * Be sure to keep your English Springer Spaniel on a leash when you take him to unprotected areas. ADDED TO PREVIOUS ANSWER: I have a springer spaniel and have many friends who have them also. They... * love people * love water * obedient (i take him down to the park for a swim and he runs, swims, rolls, does all the doggy stuff but will come when called) springer spaniels love obeying their masters * love water * love sniffing around (as they were initially hunting dogs) * playful * the most beautiful nature of a dog i have ever seen * great with kids and families * happy, go lucky dogs * minimal guard dog ability * we have had absolutely no problems with my springer barking. if anything he barks less than most other dog breeds * do not have a yappy bark (big positive) * love attention and giving you kisses * my dog has only peed in excitement once and it was the first ever time he was alklowed inside and lots of people were over (this is fair enough though as he had been a always outside dog for over five years) * always happy to see you

What age do you recommend I have my springer spaniel's first hair cut?

What was the Cocker Spaniel first bred for?

Just after the turn of the 20th century, Alexander White of Spartanburg, South Carolina saw a small brown spaniel type dog wondering around after church service. The dog appeared to be a stray and he decided to take the dog home with him. He discovered that the dog had great hunting abilities. This stray had a wonderful bird sense. Alexander gave the dog to his hunting partner L. Whitaker Boykin. The dog was a male and he was given the name "Dumpy". The Boykin Spaniel breed has evolved from this one dog, with crosses to American Water Spaniels, Springer Spaniels, Pointers and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. It is used as a hardy retriever of upland birds as well as water fowl. The Boykin Spaniel is popular in the Southern United States among bird hunters. Its state of origin is South Carolina USA and South Carolina has designated the Boykin Spaniel its official state dog. In July 2005 the Boykin Spaniel Club of Breeders Assoc. of America was named by AKC as the official parent club. The Boykin Spaniel was an AKC FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed for many years. The BSCBAA submitted their paperwork to AKC to progress into the miscellaneous group and was approved on February 9th 2007 with the effective date of January 1st 2008. Breeders hope to move the breed from the AKC miscellaneous class to the sporting group sometime in the future.

Is the Brittany Spaniel related to the French Spaniel?

The Brittany was named for the French province of Brittany and may be the a result of crossing the Orange and White Setter and some not clearly identified French dog. Since the Brittany looks a lot like the Welsh Springer Spaniel some think the two may be related. The breed is one of the most popular pointing breeds for bird hunting. In some countries the breed is referred to as a "Brittany Spaniel", however in the United States it is referred to as just "Brittany". The Brittany was first shown in France in 1896 and first recognized by the AKC in 1934.

What was the Field Spaniel first bred for?

Originating in England in the 1800s the Field Spaniel used to be considered the same breed as the English Cocker Spaniel. The dog was used to flush and retrieve both fur and feather from land and water. In the 20th century it was decided that anything above 25 pounds would be considered a Field Spaniel and anything below would be an English Cocker Spaniel, and the two were officially separated into different breeds. During the 1800s the Field Spaniel was being bred with a greatly exaggerated length and weight. Almost a hundred years later in the 1920's the standard returned a moderate length and weight. Although it is a fine bird dog with a great, mild disposition, the breed remains rare to this day, most likely due to the extreme popularity of the Cocker Spaniel. The Field Spaniel was recognized by the AKC in 1894. Some of the Field Spaniel's talents are tracking, hunting, retrieving and watchdog.
