an infant can see a item held 4-30 inches from their face
At three months old, an infant's vision is still developing, and they can typically see objects clearly at a distance of about 8 to 12 inches. This range allows them to focus on faces and objects that are close to them. As their vision matures, they'll gradually begin to see further distances over the coming months.
The practice of infant baptism began in the early Christian church, around the 2nd century AD.
The first symptoms, a loss of night vision followed by a loss of peripheral vision, usually begin in early adolescence or young adulthood.
Infants are generally referred to as "toddlers" (12-36 months) upon reaching the age of one or when they begin to walk.

I was always under the impression that Mary appeared to him in a vision, in which he was granted the privileged of holding the infant Jesus. I presume the lily symbolizes something like purity though.
This is partially true. Babies do prefer to look at toys that have large areas of bold color and strong contrasts between colors. But an infant's color vision is not as strong as an adult's and their vision is fairly blurry. So often it's not the color itself that attracts their attention, but the brightness/darkness or contrast.
