After it’s gone through mechanical digestion (chewing) and oral chemical digestion (salivary enzymes like amylase begin breaking down the constituent molecules of the food), and prior to entering the digestive tract via the esophagus.

What is bolus and how is it formed?

Bolus is the form which is taken by food which is being chewed. When you chew food in your mouth, saliva is excreted releasing amylase to break down the watch in the food. Your mouth (teeth, tongue etc) works in a certain way so that the food you are about to digest is formed into a ball shape called Bolus. It is turned into this shape so that it can move through the oesophagus more easily. Bolus will also be covered in digestive juices as it travels down the pipe however it breaks down once it reaches the small intestine.

What area of the stomach does the bolus of food first enter?

On my computer it shows that someone put this answer in reponse to the question: "Pretty sure it's the Cardiac Region, but I'm not 100% sure....."The bolus of food does indeed move from the esophagus and passes through the cardiac sphincter, which allows passage into the stomach. However there are three portions of the stomach: the upper portion called the fundus, the body of the stomach and the part nearest the small intestine called the pylorus. Hence, the area of the stomach the bolus of food first enters into is the fundus.

Food is transformed into a small lump called a bolus through the process of chewing and mixing it with saliva in the mouth. The mechanical and chemical breakdown of food in the mouth helps form the bolus, which is then swallowed and passes through the esophagus into the stomach where further digestion occurs.

Where does peristalsis move food to?

Peristalsis starts in the back of the tongue and moves food down the esophagus to the stomach. The food is later squeezed into the small intestines where peristalsis moves the food 'bolus' (BOW-luss) down the small intestines to the large intestine, or colon. Peristalsis in the colon moves the bolus into the rectum, which makes you feel like you have to go to the bathroom. Peristalsis in the colon and rectum force the bolus down and out and into the toilet.
