On my computer it shows that someone put this answer in reponse to the question: "Pretty sure it's the Cardiac Region, but I'm not 100% sure....."

The bolus of food does indeed move from the esophagus and passes through the cardiac sphincter, which allows passage into the stomach. However there are three portions of the stomach: the upper portion called the fundus, the body of the stomach and the part nearest the small intestine called the pylorus. Hence, the area of the stomach the bolus of food first enters into is the fundus.

Understanding the Riks of Gastic Banding?

Gastric banding is the placement of a hollow, silicone ring around the upper area of the stomach that is filled with saline. This forms a small pouch above the band while leaving the lower area of the stomach beneath. The area in the stomach for food stomach is reduced since the pouch made above the band is only able to hold a small portion of food at a time. The band around the stomach limits the amount of food that enters, causing the stomach to fill up slowly. There is a continual sensation of fullness; therefore, individuals begin to eat less. It has been known for someone who has undergone gastric banding to lose up to 60 pounds over a period of two years from the time the procedure took place. The majority of the weight lost typically takes place in the first year. Benefits of gastric banding ~A fairly safe operation ~There is low risk of more serious complications ~Least invasive procedure with no cutting or stapling on the stomach ~The anatomy of the stomach is not altered ~The band can easily be adjusted to the patient’s needs ~The band can be fully removed laparoscopically ~A short stay in the hospital is needed, usually no longer than 48 hours Gastric banding is the second most common surgery performed for weight loss, after gastric bypass. Long term success of gastric banding will depend on the quality of care, bad adjustment and support after the surgical procedure. The cost of gastric banding ranges between $17,000 and $30,000 and insurances typically pay for part or even all of the surgery as well as some of the fills. This type of surgery does have a lot of advantage and benefits but it also comes with some risks that should be considered before the surgery, including bleeding, infection, slippage of the band, erosion of the band, deflation or enlargement of the stomach, reflux or GERD and the very unlikely possibility of death.

How do your white blood cells disarm foreign bacteria?

The WBC's (White Blood Cells) enter the area with the bacteria. When the reach, they give off antibodies, which then go and attach to the bacteria. This stops the bacteria. Then the macrophages, or the largest WBC's devour the bacteria along with the antibodies. A chemical in the macrophage causes the bacteria to dissolve.

How does food go down the esophagus?

When food enters the oesophagus, waves of muscular contraction and relaxation push the bolus down towards the stomach. As the muscle contracts and squeezes, the bolus moves to the area where the muscle is relaxed, which will be further down the oesophagus. The muscles further up will stay cntracted so that the bolus can't work it's way back up. Eventually, the bolus will reach the stomach.

What is the physiological consequence of chewing?

the chewing motion (mastication) triggers the brain to believe that a meal is being ingested. This stimulates the parasympathetic vagus nerve to fire impulses to the stomach to release digestive juices in anticipation for the meal. This also causes duodenal juices to be secreted, and the fundus (entrance area) of the stomach to dilate/relax in anticipation of the entry of a food bolus.

The bottom of the stomach is the pyloric area, with the pyloric sphincter separating the stomach from the duodenum (first portion of the small intestine). The top of the stomach is the cardiac area with the cardiac sphincter. The pre-pyloric area is the area just above the phyloric sphincter where they do biopsies to test for an H-Pylori infection. The pyloric area consists of two parts the pyloric canal and the pyloric antrum.

How do the cartilaginous rings of trachea looks like?

They are C-shaped, with the opening in the back so that when you swallow food, the esophagus expands into the area of the trachea to allow the food (called a bolus) to go down. This process is called deglutition. If they were not C-shaped and positioned this way, your food would not be able to go down into your stomach.
