Depends on how gregarious the rooster is. It sometime takes a few days for the flock to accept the new guy and then a few days beyond that to start mating. I would give the new fellow at least 10 days before expecting fertile eggs and even after that amount of time a little discreet observation would ensure he is doing his job.

Any male chicken under a year old is called a cockerel. Different breeds vary as to when they fully mature. On average, a male chicken will start to practice mount his brood mates at about 6 months old but it takes time to learn and like most males of any species, they are awkward at best. Count on even the slowest maturing cockerel to be fully functioning at about 8 to 10 months old. Some breeds of chicken will start a little earlier.

He may start mounting the hens after a few days but to be sure you will need to give him a week or 10 days to make the rounds. Not all hens are receptive at first and it can take days for them all to be fertilized.

Cockerels will start to mount hens at between 16 to 20 weeks old. This can vary depending on breed of chicken. Some late maturing chickens may not attempt to mate until they are closer to 30 weeks.

The sperm packet is stored in the cloaca of the hen for about 10 days and after that it needs replenishing. After a rooster dies it's progeny can go one for up to 10 more days.

How can you tell if the eggs are fertile?

Do you have a Rooster living with Hens? If so, chances are, yes, the eggs will be fertile. If the hen is brooding, meaning she is sitting on top of the egg to keep it warm, then it's probably fertile, if not, then it's not fertile. In any case should you have a rooster and a hen together, and the hen lays an egg, and it doesn't brood, then you should keep the egg warm. I think to check just hold the egg up to a light lol.

How many hens do you need for two roosters?

usually the ratio of hens to rooster is about 15 hens for every rooster. If you keep them separated an extra rooster is not a problem but in a flock of 24 hens, you will have some squabbling between the dominant rooster and the #2 .

Can a hen lay eggs without mating?

Yes Pullets will start laying at about 5 months old. A rooster does not need to be involved at all. Eggs are produced without the help of a rooster. All the rooster does is fertilize the eggs and guard the flock. The chickens who produce the eggs you buy at the big supermarkets and grocery stores with live out their productive years without ever seeing a rooster. Yes Hens will lay without mating with a cockrel they will start to lay at about 5 months old. If a hen did lay after mating that egg may be fertile as that is all the Cockrel does. I just want to say Heyyy to my friends Suzie,Anna and Annaliese xxxxxx
