It should be noted that in many of the countries of the southern hemisphere, Spring officially begins on the 1st of September every year. Countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, as well as many island nations of the South Pacific, recognise the start of Spring, rather than the vernal equinox, as being the beginning of September.

Spring, which is the transitional season between winter and summer, officially begins in March and ends in June in the northern hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere, Spring officially begins in September and ends in December.

The Northern HemisphereThe vernal equinox (when spring begins in the northern hemisphere) occurs when the earth's axis is tilted neither towards nor away from the sun. As the season progresses, the earth's axis increases it's tilt towards the sun in preparation for summer. When spring ends in the northern hemisphere, we have the summer solstice ie the beginning of summer, which is the longest day of the year and when the earth's axis is tilted towards the sun. The Southern HemisphereThe beginning and end of spring in the southern hemisphere do not coincide with the vernal equinox and the summer solstice but with the climatological changes in the seasons ie the change from the very, very cold months (winter) to the warmer months (which marks the beginning of Spring) and from the warmer months to the hot months (which marks the end of Spring and the beginning of Summer).

Please note: Different regions and different countries may observe the beginning of Spring at different times. In some traditions, such as Candlemas in the US and St. Brigid's Day in Ireland, Spring begins on the first of February.
