In Europe the feast of St. Nicholas was celebrated on December 6 and children received small gifts from St. Nick, usually left in their shoes on the door step of their home. Somehow St. Nick was hijacked and turned into a commercial promoter of Christmas to increase sales. and the true meaning of both Christmas and the Feast of St. Nicholas was lost due to greed of merchants.

6th December is St Nicholas' Day. (Santa Claus is based on St Nicholas). On the 6th of DDecember in Germany, St Nicholas or Nikolaus would hand out sweets and fruit to all the good children but if you were bad his helper would give you a whip so your parents could punish you. St Nicholas was based on the Bishop who gave money to the poor.
When distributing gifts in Holland St Nicholas is accompanies by Black Pete. Black Pete is the one to actually give out the gifts.
The kids put their shoes out in front of their doors and St. Nick (Santa Claus) puts little gifts inside. That's the only one I know of.
