The first duty of the President is to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Before the President takes office he swears this oath on the Bible.
Second in line to the presidency is the Speaker of the House.
The President assumes his duties upon being sworn into office. This used to occur on March 4, but in 1934, it was moved to January 20, and it is on that day when the new president officially takes office.
If the vice-president had to assume the office, he would be sworn in as President of the United States and would be called "Mr. President" from that time on.
