No amendments were initially added to the Constitution because the founding fathers thought it was complete enough. They didn't feel it was necessary to enumerate rights. They also felt that if they started enumerating rights, it would set a bad precedent and imply nobody had rights which were not listed. The more liberal-minded of that day felt there needed to be a fail-safe measure for the future.
