When dry ice appears to give off smoke it is solid carbon dioxide subliming to vapor. The "smoke" is thus carbon dioxide gas.

Dry ice is also often used in the theatre/television/movies etc. because it is cold enough to condense water vapour in the air to produce fog that may resemble smoke. Please see the link.
