only the noble gases have completed outer (electron shell) rings. (They do not form compounds.)
To complete their outer shell, all other elements must share electrons, thus: compounds.
They want to be as cool as the noble gases :)
There are several types of bonds possible. There are hydrogen bonds, covalent bonds, ionic bonds, and metallic bonds.
Atoms form compounds by sharing electrons to create full-levels which keeps them balanced and uniform. The first level is 2 electrons, the second is 8, the third is 18, and it keeps growing from there. The bonds explain different ways the electrons can be used between the multiple atoms. Covalent bonds are when electrons are 'shared'. Hydrogen bonding is a form of covalent bonding except it pretty much just deals with how hydrogen only has 1 electron. For example, take water for instance (H2O). Oxygen has 6 electrons in its natural state and hydrogen each have one. If hydrogen holds hands with oxygen then the hydrogen is happy because its lowest level (2) is full. Another hydrogen atom comes along and share it's electron, now each hydrogen atom has 2 electrons and the oxygen has 8. But why does oxygen want 8 and now not 2? Because it is officially at its happiest when its at 8.
Then there are ionic bonds when the electrons are just given/taken away and theres no sharing at all. This creates positive and negative atoms because now it has an unbalanced charge between protons and electrons (called ions). Metallic bonding deals with metals and how they conduct electricity. These metal atoms are bound together and have extra electrons that just flow through the entire block of material which is why metals conduct electricity (the movement of electrons).
So to some up why atoms bond, its to form complete energy levels in order to be balance and at peace with themselves.
to think about how element and compounds combine you need to learn about forces of nature, most specifically the force of an atom to fill it's valence orbital shell. you see all atoms i certain pressures and temperatures like to exist in certain forms, so when atoms are not in these form anyway of getting there is going to happen, in some cases this means our atom is going to combine with a like atom and share an electron, some time the atom will combine with an atom that tends to give up an electron to be stable and in that way our atom will also be stable. Now when we talk about givving up an electron it is not like the electron just leaves and both atoms go on there way, what happens is a bond occurs so that both atoms have the electrons they need, but energy of that electron transpher goes into a bond that hold both atoms together. that is how they combine.
I had to answer this for my homework, and here is what i found...
A compound is formed when two or more elements combine together chemically, many elements are chemically reactive.

There are two ways that elements can combine, depending on whether or not it is a metal or non-metal
If two or more different elements combine chemically, they make a compound. However, metallic elements can combine without forming compounds, instead forming the special class of mixtures called alloys.
The atoms within a compound can be held together by a variety of interactions, ranging from covalent bonds to electrostatic forces in ionic bonds. A continuum of bond polarities exist between the purely covalent bond (as in H2) and ionic bonds. For example H2O is held together by polar covalent bonds. Sodium chloride is an example of an ionic compound. Formation of a compound involves a chemical reaction, whereas a mixture can be created simply by the physical act of stirring items together.

Elements combine to form compounds to become more stable
It would form a compund. For example, the most famous coumpoud is H2O. This compound is made out of two Hydrogen molecules and one oxygen.
Atoms of elements combine in fixed ratios will form compounds.
Molecule if there is some sharing of electrons or an ionic compound if there is a donation of an electron from one atom to another.
Atoms of elements combine to form compounds. A chemical compound is a pure chemical substance consisting of two or more different chemical elements that can be separated into simpler substances.

Elements combine together by chemical bonding to form compounds.
Compound?
Yes, it is correct.
The propertys of the elements change. For example:both chlorine and sodium are highly reactive, but whenthey combine the form a compound. this compound iswhich alot of people eat everyday.
