You appear to be referring to Occam's Razor. Or:
"Pluralitas non est ponenda sine neccesitate" (Entities should not be multiplied unnecessarily).
"Frustra fit per plura quod potest fieri per pauciora" (In vain accomplished by several means what can be done for by a few).
In essence, the simplest answer is probably the most correct. It is a method of breaking down difficult or compex concepts into smaller, more manageable elements so that one can more easily analyze them.
This is also an example of the deductive reasoning that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes used. See the 1890, The Sign of Four, Chapter 1, p.92, "Eliminate all other factors, and the one which remains must be the truth."
