eutrophication
eutrophication
Fertilizer in a lake helps algae grow. Up to a certain point, that is good. The algae turns carbon dioxide into oxygen and adds oxygen to the water. However, after that point, the algae covers the lake. Oxygen from the air can not get to deeper water. Dead algae falls to the bottom of the lake and decomposes. The process of decomposing uses up oxygen. The amount of oxygen in the lake drops below the point where fish can survive. Thus, over fertilization leads to a fish kill.

excess nitrogen from runoff would cause excess algae and plant growth, possibly affecting fish populations by decreasing the livable area of the water for fish. the excess algae bloom will deplete oxygen in the water causeing dead zones where there is not enough oxygen for fish to survive.
