The minicomputer was invented as early as the mid 1960s and were sold for a cheaper price than the larger computers from competitors that were on the market. It is rarely called a minicomputer now, it is now known as a midrange computer.

Many computer historians consider the DEC PDP-1 to be the first minicomputer, but it was still quite large and was built entirely with discrete transistors. Most computer historians consider the DEC PDP-8 to be the first minicomputer as it was actually small enough to sit on a desk and later models were built with monolithic integrated circuits.
