When camping my first suggestion is to camp in a state, federal or private campground instead of a primitive camp. With the above campgrounds you will have restrooms, sometimes showers, and a good area to camp in. You need to look for a flat smooth space for your tent ( I always like a tree near) and enough space for your other gear plus car. Make sure of the placement of the door of your tent because where you put it is what you face and note the placement of the sun. I always spray my tent down with bug repellent because this will not only keep out critters but masks scents for any native animals like bears. Don't put food in your tent if you are in a bear area and make sure it is secure from raccoons (they will open things). When you leave your camping space for any time it is good to secure your things and make sure your tent is zipped closed and secure. If this is a new tent make sure you put it up at home and seal the seams for waterproofing. I have been camping all my life and have camped in 48 states and 6 countries so my suggestions are from experience.
