The wolves acted as a check on the number of elk and they removed any old or weak ones. This made the herds smaller but stronger. As far as the grass, fewer elk meant more grass (overgrowth). The ecosystems we live in are in forms that make for checks and balances.
Elk became over-populated and the vegetation became more pressured because these animals became more apt to stay and eat in one area instead of moving around to eat. Wolves make the herbivores like elk move from place to place while at the same time taking out the weak, old, young and even the dumb animals.
Yellowstone park had no wolves for a long time and the large elk population kept all young alder and aspin trees grazed to extinction. There were no young (alder & aspin) trees in the park. Wolves were introduced in the 70's and now there are large groves of young trees - this is due to a dramatic decrease in the elk population - due to predations by wolves.
