with 4-wheel drive engaged make a sharp turn at low speed. (2mph wheel turned max left or right) if it rolls in a circle smooth the hubs are unlocked. if it feels like it binds or is jerky while turing your hubs are still engagedupdated answerdon't ever make a sharp turn on pavement with 4 wheel drive engaged. you could easily break something in the front drive train. Another answerPut the car back in 2-wheel mode, then drive in reverse (in a straight line) for about 20 to 40 feet. This should fully disengage the hubs...this is a good safety if you've been driving in 4-wheel low.

If You have Manual Locking Front Hubs, Then the 4 wheel drive will not work/drive the front 2 wheels at all without, Locking-Them-In . Do Not Lock and use the 4 wheel drive on Dry Pavement.
If the automatic 4x4 works but the front hubs do not engage in a 1994 Ranger, there is no 4 wheel drive. The transaxle for the 4 wheel drive has to be repaired.
Depends on what year it is and whether it's straight drive. On my 'straight drive '81 you start with the regular shift lever (the one you shift when driving) in 1st gear and give the vehicle a little gas while trying to move the the transfer case shift lever (the other stick) out of 4 wheel drive and into 2 wheel drive. If you have the old lockout wheel hubs you will also have to turn them to the left til they click. They are only on the front wheels of course.
the truck has to be in 4 wheel drive before u unlock the hubs
try driving it in reverse for a bit before you go forward.....rosdale joe
i believe its a automatic friction lock if u don't have manual locking hubs
4x4 hubs will have oil.2 wheel drive will have grease
If 4-wheel drive is not needed, you should unlock the front hubs. Yes, the hubs remain locked even if your front transfer case is not set to 4-wheel drive, and this can be very hard on both the hubs and transfer case.
the vacuume lines and hubs are damaged. chenge the hubs over to Warn style hubs. Look on the net for info on warn hubs.
check the hubs most of the time the hubs need to be replaced
