Best Answer

Ionic compounds form because there are some types of elements, known as metals, which form a stable electron configuration by giving up electrons, and other types of elements called nonmetals which form stable electron configurations by acquiring electrons, and so, when a metal and a nonmetal get together, the metal can give one or more electrons to the nonmetal and both elements become more stable as a result. Then, the two ions which are formed by this transfer of electrons will attract each other since they have opposite charges, and thereby have an ionic bond, making them into an ionic compound.

Whenever an electropositive element (metal) reacts with an electronegative element (non metal) the transfer of electron takes place from metal to a non-metal forming ionic bond.
